insurance coverage
Coverage can be confusing so here is some basic information on insurance coverage and massage therapy.
Extended Health Insurance Coverage
Direct Billing Now Available
I’m now able to offer direct billing for most insurance providers. So now your massage treatments are that much more relaxing since you don’t have to deal with paying and processing with your extended insurance provider.
How Does Extended Health Insurance Coverage Work?
Most extended health care plans cover partial or full reimbursement for registered massage therapy. Workplace employee health benefit coverage vary widely, such as amount covered per session, annual ceiling amount, depending on the plan your employer has created with the insurance provider. If you are unsure of your coverage contact your insurance provider or HR representative. A medical referral from a physician may be required for reimbursement of claims.
ICBC
It is important to note that coverage for massage therapy with ICBC can vary with individual claimants and it is important to maintain good communication with your adjuster in regards to how much coverage you will be receiving. There are universal things you can expect:
- Massage therapy is a nondiscretionary therapy which means that motor vehicle accident injured claimants are automatically approved for treatments.
- There is no time limit on receiving massage treatments as long as your claim is still open.
- MD referrals are not required for the first 12 treatments. You may be required to have your MD’s referral if you need more than the 12 treatment coverage minimum. Treatments need to be deemed reasonable and necessary for the request to be considered.
- 12 treatments is the regulated minimum of ICBC. Note that ICBC will be $23 per treatment and not the full cost which results in the rest of the cost placed on the claimant. Claimants may seek to have treatments paid in full through a settlement but it is not a given that the complete cost of massage treatments will be covered.
ICBC coverage coverage changes regularly and it is recommended to check with your provider for further details or contact the wonderful administrative staff at Hartwell for up to date information.
